What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science and, as such, does not include pharmaceuticals or incisive surgery. "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body).

Chiropractic Education

People often wonder, "Is the education of a Doctor of Chiropractic at the same level as a Medical Doctor?" The correct answer is, of course, yes. Doctors of Chiropractic undergo a rigorous and demanding professional education equivalent to any other primary care provider. To obtain a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, one must complete several years of prerequisite undergraduate education and spend nearly the same number of classroom hours at a fully-accredited chiropractic college as MDs do in medical schools. Student doctors are thoroughly trained in the appropriate use of sophisticated analytical equipment including X-rays, examination procedures, and state of the art chiropractic investigative technologies. Before one can actually practice, all Doctors of Chiropractic must pass a series of National Boards, as well as a licensing exam for the state in which they choose to practice. In addition to these national requirements, most states require the doctors to attend clinical continuing education programs for annual relicensure.

What can I expect on my first visit?

When you enter the office you will be greeted by our friendly receptionists who will direct you to fill out a few standard forms. You will be seen by the chiropractor (Dr. Khodabakhsh). The first thing he will do is ask you about your health complaints and what your chief complaint is. The DC will also ask about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem.

A physical examination will be performed in accordance with your DC's clinical judgment, which may include x-rays, laboratory analysis and other diagnostic procedures. A careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be affecting or causing your condition. The chiropractor will look for muscle or postural imbalances that could be the cause your complaints. All of these elements are important components of your total health profile, and vital to the doctor of chiropractic in evaluating your problem.
